And while the rest—purity, kindness, self-control—are broader topics, all are certainly vital within the context of home and family relationships.

So one important takeaway from this passage is that God cares about what happens inside the walls of our houses. Our home life—far from being a separate compartment from our spiritual life and witness—is a foundational way we express the love of God and the beauty of the gospel.

Home, as God designed it, is not a cultural convention or a matter of pragmatic convenience. It is intended to be a parable of the redemptive storyline in which He is intent on restoring Paradise, establishing His dwelling among men, and making beloved sons and daughters out of prodigals. Christian homes are meant to tell that story.

That is not to say that those who do not marry or bear children are excluded from this story—or that a discussion of the responsibilities and blessings of home leaves them stranded on the sideline.

No, at some level, Paul’s home-based curriculum applies to all of us.

So if you’re tempted to skip over these chapters because you’re not in the “young wife and mom” demographic, I hope you’ll hang in there with me as we explore how all of us can live out and adorn the gospel of Christ on the home front.
